This is such a common dynamic, and it can strain relationships. Teens with ADHD often struggle with prospective memory, meaning remembering to do something later, even if they agree it matters.
Instead of relying on verbal reminders, we focus on external structure. Linking medication to an existing habit like brushing teeth, using phone alarms they control, or pill organizers placed in visible areas can help. The goal is shifting from parent driven reminders to system driven support.
It also helps to involve the teen in the why. When they can identify how medication helps them personally, such as better focus in class or fewer emotional blow ups, adherence improves.
Reducing shame and increasing autonomy makes a big difference.
