How can I bring up ADHD with my partner without making it sound like an excuse?
I want to talk to my partner about the possibility that I might have ADHD, but I’m scared it will come across as blaming the condition for all of our problems. How do clinicians suggest people frame this conversation so it’s honest without feeling like an excuse? I want them to understand the patterns I’m noticing, but also that I’m taking responsibility and trying to get help. I’m worried the topic will be misunderstood, especially if they don’t know much about ADHD.

This conversation works best when framed around understanding rather than justification. ADHD isn’t an excuse for harm, but it is an explanation for patterns. Sharing it as a way to improve communication and teamwork can help your partner feel included rather than blamed.
You might focus on how awareness leads to better strategies, not less responsibility. For example, “Understanding this helps me work on things more effectively” emphasizes growth. It’s okay to acknowledge impact while also explaining why things happen. Accountability and compassion can exist together.
