Why do stimulants calm some people but hype others?

Stimulants affect dopamine and norepinephrine, but everyone’s baseline chemistry is different. In people with ADHD, stimulants often improve regulation, which feels calming and clarifying. In others, especially at higher doses or early in treatment, the same medication can feel activating or alerting. This doesn’t mean one response is right and the other is wrong. Clinicians adjust dose, timing, or medication type based on how the nervous system responds. A medication that feels too activating may simply not be the right fit yet.
