Struggling with “simple” deadlines even when I care about the work

I keep missing small deadlines even for stuff I actually want to finish. Is this the sort of executive dysfunction pattern you see in ADHD, or could this be general burnout?

This is classic executive dysfunction. Caring about something does not automatically translate into task initiation. ADHD affects planning, sequencing, time awareness, and prioritization. Small deadlines can slip because they do not trigger urgency. Many people with ADHD rely on pressure to activate focus. Without that external push, the brain does not engage, even if the task matters emotionally. The solution is not trying harder. It is building external structure. Visible task lists, breaking work into very small steps, artificial mini deadlines, and accountability systems can bridge the gap between intention and action. Missing deadlines does not mean you are irresponsible. It often means your brain needs different scaffolding.
