How do you talk to patients who feel ashamed about needing psychiatric medication at all?
I grew up hearing that people should just 'push through' instead of taking tablets. Now my doctor is recommending medication and I feel like I've failed at coping. What conversations or metaphors do you use with patients who feel this kind of shame about starting psychiatric meds?

With compassion and normalization. Shame around medication is common, especially if someone was raised to believe they should just push through. I reframe medication as one tool among many. We use glasses for vision and insulin for diabetes. Brain based conditions deserve the same respect. Taking medication does not mean weakness. It means you are willing to reduce suffering and improve functioning. We also discuss fears openly. The goal is informed choice, not pressure.
