Sometimes a strategy works great, then the next day it does nothing and I feel like I’m back to square one. How do you build consistency without blaming yourself every time your brain refuses to cooperate?

For many people with ADHD, self discipline is an unreliable concept because it assumes a stable nervous system. ADHD brains fluctuate day to day based on sleep, stress, hormones, novelty, and environment. A strategy that works beautifully one day may fail the next, not because you lacked willpower, but because your internal state changed. Instead of discipline, clinicians often focus on adaptability. This means building multiple low effort strategies and choosing based on how your brain feels that day. Think of it as having a menu, not a rule. Success comes from meeting your brain where it is, not forcing consistency that your nervous system cannot sustain. Self compassion is part of this. Flexibility is not failure. It is a more accurate response to how ADHD actually works.
