ADHD is associated with differences in how the prefrontal cortex regulates attention, planning, impulse control, and working memory. This doesn’t mean the area is damaged. It means regulation and signaling are less efficient. Clinically, this shows up as difficulty starting tasks, holding information in mind, managing time, and controlling emotional responses. Effort is still there, but the brain has trouble coordinating it consistently. Understanding this helps shift ADHD away from moral explanations and toward a neurological one, which is often deeply relieving.
