Most clinicians don’t see these approaches as opposites. Neurodiversity emphasizes respect, acceptance, and reducing shame. Medical treatment focuses on reducing suffering and improving functioning. Both can coexist. Clinicians often explain that treating ADHD doesn’t mean erasing who you are. It means supporting regulation so strengths are easier to access and daily life is less exhausting. Respecting neurodiversity means the goal isn’t normalization. It’s helping people live well in a world that isn’t always built for them.
