This pattern you’re describing is very common in men with ADHD, and it often goes unrecognized for a long time. Many men are socialized to push through discomfort, minimize emotional strain, and measure worth through productivity. When ADHD is layered onto that, burnout often looks less like gradual exhaustion and more like an all-out crash. You run on urgency, pressure, or adrenaline for years, performing well enough on the outside, until your nervous system simply cannot keep up anymore. Clinically, burnout in men with ADHD often shows up as sudden shutdown rather than slow decline. Focus collapses, motivation disappears, sleep gets disrupted, irritability spikes, and there may be a strong urge to withdraw or escape. Because emotional distress is often under-recognized or unspoken, it can come out as anger, numbness, physical symptoms, or complete disengagement rather than sadness. Another factor is masking. Many men with ADHD rely on high effort coping strategies like overworking, perfectionism, or staying constantly busy to avoid falling behind. These strategies can work for a long time, but they are expensive. Burnout happens when effort keeps increasing but recovery never does. What helps is reframing burnout as a nervous system signal, not a personal failure. The crash is not because you are weak. It is because you were compensating without enough support for too long. Recovery usually involves learning to pace, externalize structure, and build in rest before the wall appears. That can feel unfamiliar or even threatening at first, but it is often the difference between repeating the cycle and actually breaking it.
