External structure plays a huge role in ADHD functioning. When teachers, parents, or supervisors provided reminders and accountability, they were essentially acting as external executive functions. Once that structure disappears, everything relies on internal regulation.
This transition often happens in adulthood and can feel like sudden failure, even though nothing about your abilities actually changed. The environment changed. Without scaffolding, tasks that were once manageable can become overwhelming.
Needing structure does not mean you are immature or incapable. It means your brain works better with visible supports, and rebuilding those intentionally can restore functioning.
