ADHD seems at odds with how masculinity is portrayed. How do clinicians help men integrate ADHD into a healthier sense of masculinity?

Yes. Clinicians absolutely believe this is possible, and many men do this work in deeply meaningful ways. The tension you’re noticing comes from how masculinity is often defined. Control, stoicism, consistency, self discipline, being the provider who never drops the ball. ADHD can collide with that image because regulation is variable, emotions can be intense, and effort does not always translate into steady output. That mismatch can create a lot of shame. Clinically, the work starts by separating masculinity from performance. ADHD does not take away strength, responsibility, or reliability. It changes how those show up. Many men with ADHD are highly resilient, creative, protective, emotionally perceptive, and crisis capable. These are strengths that often get overlooked because they don’t fit narrow ideals. Another piece is redefining responsibility. Healthy masculinity is not white knuckling everything alone. It includes knowing your limits, building systems, asking for support, and pacing yourself so you don’t burn out. Clinicians often frame this as self leadership rather than self control. Emotional honesty matters too. ADHD men are often told to suppress frustration, overwhelm, or vulnerability. Learning to name emotions and respond to them skillfully is not a loss of masculinity. It is maturity and regulation. A healthier model of masculinity makes room for variability. It values integrity over perfection and sustainability over constant output. ADHD does not disqualify you from that. In many cases, understanding ADHD is what allows men to build a version of masculinity that is grounded, self respecting, and real rather than performative. You’re not failing masculinity. You’re being asked to redefine it in a way that actually fits your nervous system.
