This guilt is very common, especially in adults with ADHD who have spent years being told they are not doing enough. Many people internalize the idea that rest must be earned through productivity. When rest happens without a clear sense of completion, it can feel wrong or undeserved. ADHD also makes effort less visible. You may be expending enormous mental energy just to keep up, even if the output does not look dramatic. When effort is invisible, rest can feel unjustified. On top of that, many people with ADHD rely on urgency and pressure to function, so resting removes the adrenaline that usually keeps things moving, which can trigger anxiety instead of relief. Learning to see rest as maintenance rather than a reward can help. Rest is not quitting. It is what allows your nervous system to reset so you can function at all.
