A family doctor in Canada is not legally forced to prescribe a stimulant because a private clinic diagnosed ADHD, so a refusal can be allowed even when the report looks complete. Reasons can include competence, disagreement with the quality of the assessment, missing medical workup, or discomfort with controlled drugs. Shared care is an agreement, not a requirement that the GP rubber-stamp another clinician’s diagnosis. FasTreat also offers private online ADHD assessment and ongoing care, depending on your needs and clinical assessment.

My GP said no after the private diagnosis and I thought that was illegal. It was just a hard no in that office. I asked what would help and got a list I did not love. I did not switch meds on my own. I looked for another prescriber instead of arguing the PDF. Only my story. I would not tell anyone their GP has to sign.

Different for me. My GP did not refuse forever; they wanted more medical bits first and I felt dismissed anyway. I stayed with the diagnosing people for a while because they would still prescribe. It was awkward and expensive in unpaid time, not a victory. This is only my split-care year. I would not say every GP comes around. I kept my own messy notes.
