How do doctors decide who's a good candidate for ADHD meds?

Medication decisions are not based on how severe someone looks or whether they’re “bad enough.” Clinicians look at whether ADHD symptoms are causing meaningful impairment or strain, and whether non medication strategies alone are sufficient. The focus is function and quality of life, not comparison to others. Doctors also consider medical history, coexisting conditions, risks, benefits, and patient preference. Some people benefit significantly from medication even if they’re functioning outwardly, because the internal cost is high. Medication is not a reward for suffering enough. It’s a tool offered when symptoms are persistent and impactful.
