For people with ADHD, flexibility is challenging because sudden changes place a heavy load on the brain’s executive‑function system, which is already working harder than average to manage planning, transitions, and emotional regulation. When a routine shifts or a plan is disrupted, the brain has to rapidly reorient, update priorities, and generate a new sequence of actions which are tasks that rely on working memory and cognitive control, both of which are more fragile in ADHD. On top of that, unexpected changes often trigger an emotional surge: frustration, anxiety, or a sense of being “thrown off,” which further taxes the system and makes it harder to adapt smoothly. Many people with ADHD also rely on structure and predictability to stay regulated, so when that structure disappears, it can feel like the floor drops out from under them. This isn’t inflexibility in a personality sense, it’s a neurobiological response to sudden cognitive and emotional demands that exceed the brain’s available bandwidth.
