When I start seeing someone, I can become intensely focused on them—texting a lot, overthinking, wanting constant reassurance—then I crash. Is this related to ADHD (or something else), and how can I pace myself without feeling like I’m pretending?

ADHD can intensify early dating because novelty, emotional connection, and anticipation all increase dopamine. This can show up as hyperfocus on the other person, frequent messaging, or fast emotional attachment. It’s not manipulation or neediness. It’s how the nervous system responds to new connection. Clinicians often suggest slowing external behaviors even if feelings are strong. Creating pacing rules, maintaining routines, and keeping other supports active can help. Strong feelings aren’t wrong, but protecting balance early on helps relationships develop more sustainably.
