Is my constant fidgeting normal or excessive?
I shake my leg constantly and tap things without realising.
Clinically, is this typical or something else?

What you’re describing is very common, especially in adults with ADHD. Constant leg shaking, tapping, or small repetitive movements are often forms of self regulation rather than signs that something is wrong.
Many people think hyperactivity always looks loud or disruptive. In adults, it’s usually more subtle. It shows up as internal restlessness or small movements that help the body discharge energy. Often you’re not even aware you’re doing it until someone points it out.
Clinically, we look at two things. First, is the movement helping you concentrate or stay regulated? Many people actually focus better when they’re moving a little. Second, is it causing problems, like social discomfort, physical strain, or feeling out of control? If it’s just a background habit that helps you think, it’s usually not concerning.
That said, sometimes constant fidgeting can signal anxiety, high stress, or difficulty settling the nervous system. The context matters. When did it start? Does it get worse in certain situations? Does it calm when you feel relaxed?
If you’re unsure whether it’s typical ADHD restlessness or something else, that’s exactly the kind of nuance we explore in a proper assessment. It’s rarely about labeling behaviour as excessive. It’s about understanding what your body is trying to do for you and whether there are better ways to support it.
If this has been bothering you or affecting your confidence, it’s worth talking through. Often, once people understand the pattern, the self criticism drops and we can decide together what, if anything, actually needs changing.
