Do I need childhood symptoms to be diagnosed with ADHD?

ADHD is considered a neurodevelopmental condition, so symptoms must have been present earlier in life. However, that does not mean you must remember them clearly or have documentation. Clinicians often infer childhood symptoms from adult patterns, coping strategies, and long standing struggles. Many adults do not recognize childhood symptoms until later reflection. The absence of clear memories does not invalidate an assessment. The focus is on whether the pattern makes sense developmentally.
