Why do I feel emotionally ‘big’ reactions that don’t match the situation—is that ADHD?

I’ve always felt like my emotional reactions are stronger than what the moment calls for—like I go from fine to overwhelmed instantly. Is heightened emotional reactivity something clinicians commonly see with ADHD, or is it usually tied to something else like anxiety? How do you tell the difference between emotional dysregulation linked to ADHD and other mental health conditions? I’d love some clarity so I can understand myself better rather than feeling dramatic or unstable.

Yes, emotional intensity and difficulty regulating reactions are common in ADHD. The emotional response often comes quickly and strongly, before there’s time to process context. This doesn’t mean the emotions are fake or exaggerated, they’re very real, just amplified. Many people with ADHD feel emotions deeply and take longer to return to baseline. Over time, this can create shame or confusion about why reactions feel so intense. Learning that this is a regulation difference, not a personality flaw, can be incredibly validating. With support, people can learn ways to slow the response and recover more gently.
