Is AuDHD an actual diagnosis or more of a community label?

I see the term AuDHD a lot and it resonates, but I’m confused about whether it’s recognized medically or just used in neurodiversity spaces. Does it matter for getting assessed or treated?

This is a really reasonable question, and the confusion is understandable. AuDHD is not a formal diagnostic label in medical manuals. Clinically, ADHD and autism are diagnosed separately. That said, having both is absolutely recognized and not rare. When someone meets criteria for both conditions, clinicians document two diagnoses rather than a combined one. AuDHD emerged in community and neurodiversity spaces because it describes a lived experience that feels distinct. People with both often notice a push pull internally. One part of the brain craves novelty, stimulation, and flexibility, while another needs predictability, routine, and sensory control. That tension can feel very different from having ADHD or autism alone, and the term helps people feel seen. From a clinical standpoint, the label itself matters less than accurate assessment. If you resonate with AuDHD, it is still important to assess ADHD and autism individually. Each has different diagnostic criteria, supports, and treatment considerations. For example, ADHD medications may help focus but not sensory overload. Autism informed supports may help with predictability but not motivation. Knowing both profiles matters for care. So yes, AuDHD is more of a descriptive shorthand than a medical diagnosis. But that does not make it meaningless. It can guide self understanding and help you articulate your experience. For assessment and treatment, clinicians focus on the components. For identity and community, people often use the combined term because it captures the reality better. Both can coexist without canceling each other out.
