ADHD often looks different in women than in men, which is why many women go undiagnosed for years. In men, ADHD is more likely to present with obvious hyperactivity, impulsivity, and externalizing behaviors that draw attention in school or at home. Women, on the other hand, more commonly have the inattentive type. This means they might struggle with focus, organization, time management, forgetfulness, or mental fatigue rather than running around or acting out. Women also tend to be better at masking or compensating for their difficulties for example they may overprepare, stay extra organized, or work twice as hard to meet expectations. So their struggles are less visible to teachers, family, or even themselves. Emotional sensitivity, perfectionism, and anxiety often accompany ADHD in women, which can further obscure the underlying attention and executive function challenges. In short, ADHD in women is often quieter, more internalized, and harder to spot, but it can still be just as impairing.
