This comes up a lot, and there’s usually more going on than just “nerves.” For many adults with ADHD, anxiety ramps up an already fast moving thought process. When you’re under pressure, your brain starts firing quickly and speech becomes a way to keep up with it. Talking faster can feel like the only way to get everything out before you lose the thread or forget what you wanted to say. There’s also a regulation piece. ADHD affects the internal pacing system, so when anxiety kicks in, the usual brakes that help slow things down aren’t as strong. Words can come out in a rush, especially when you care about being understood or feel put on the spot. What I often notice clinically is that this isn’t just social anxiety. It’s cognitive overflow layered with anxiety. The thoughts are coming quickly, there’s urgency to communicate clearly, and speech speeds up as a coping strategy. Many adults find that when their ADHD is better supported, their speech naturally settles. Not because they’re consciously slowing themselves down, but because their mind isn’t racing in the same way. So if you notice you talk much faster when you’re nervous, it’s often a reflection of how your brain processes speed, stress, and regulation, not a personal flaw or lack of self control.
