I'm in my 40s and only now realising ADHD fits. Why wasn't it caught earlier?

Many adults, especially those diagnosed later in life, weren’t missed because symptoms weren’t there, but because they didn’t fit the stereotype. Quiet kids, high achievers, women, and people who masked well were often overlooked. If you did okay academically, were well behaved, or had strong external structure, your struggles may have stayed invisible. Symptoms often become more obvious only when life demands exceed coping capacity, which commonly happens in adulthood. Late diagnosis doesn’t mean ADHD is mild or new. It usually means you worked very hard to compensate for a long time.
