Clinicians look at patterns, not isolated moments. Everyone forgets things when life is busy. ADHD related forgetfulness tends to be chronic, across settings, and present even when the stakes are high or the person genuinely cares. Another difference is effort. People with ADHD often use reminders, notes, alarms, and systems and still forget. The forgetting isn’t proportional to motivation. It’s related to attention and working memory, meaning information doesn’t always get encoded in the first place. If forgetfulness has been a lifelong theme, worsens under stress, and improves with structure rather than rest alone, ADHD is often considered.
