Lately I’ve been feeling overwhelmed and exhausted, and I’m trying to work out whether it’s ADHD-related emotional dysregulation or simply burnout from work and life. From your perspective, what are the key differences clinicians look for between ADHD symptoms and plain burnout? I don’t want to misinterpret things, but I also don’t want to ignore signs that point toward ADHD. Understanding the distinction would help me figure out my next steps.

Emotional overwhelm can come from several places, and is often hard to tell whether it’s related to ADHD or burnout from life stress, as the two can overlap. Looking at patterns over time rather than just how things feel right now can be helpful. With ADHD, emotional overwhelm is usually part of a long-standing pattern. People often describe feeling easily overstimulated, emotionally reactive, or flooded by tasks and demands from a young age. The overwhelm tends to show up even during relatively calm periods of life and may be triggered by things like transitions, multiple demands at once, or difficulty starting and organising tasks. There is often a sense that emotions escalate quickly and are hard to regulate, even when the situation itself is not extreme. Burnout-related overwhelm is more situational. It usually develops after a prolonged period of stress, pressure, or responsibility, especially when there has not been enough rest or support. The overwhelm often feels more like exhaustion or depletion, as if the system has run out of capacity. Another clue is recovery. If emotional overwhelm significantly improves when life becomes less demanding, burnout is more likely to be the main driver. If overwhelm has been present across many life stages and contexts, ADHD may be contributing. In practice, it is not always either-or. Burnout can intensify ADHD-related emotional difficulties, and ADHD can increase vulnerability to burnout.
