Does anyone else with ADHD feel like their brain 'shuts off' after 8pm?

My brain just clocks out every night around 8pm. I can't think, plan, or start anything. Is this a typical ADHD thing or more an exhaustion/burnout cycle?

This is extremely common. Many adults with ADHD describe a sharp drop in cognitive capacity in the evening, where planning, decision-making, and initiating tasks suddenly feel impossible. By that point, executive function resources are depleted from managing attention, regulation, and structure all day. ADHD brains often operate on limited mental “fuel,” and once it’s gone, it’s gone. This shutdown isn’t a personal failure, it’s a neurobiological pattern. Evenings may need to be designed around recovery rather than productivity. Gentle routines, pre-planned meals, minimal decisions, and allowing rest without guilt can be protective. If evenings consistently feel unmanageable, it may help to adjust expectations rather than push harder, which often backfires.
