I can hyperfocus but avoid the stuff that matters. Why is that?

This is one of the most confusing ADHD paradoxes. Hyperfocus isn’t control over attention, it’s loss of control. The brain locks onto what’s stimulating, interesting, or rewarding, regardless of importance. Tasks that feel boring, ambiguous, or emotionally loaded don’t provide enough dopamine to engage the system.
Avoidance often isn’t about not caring. It’s about the task not triggering enough activation to get started. Urgency, novelty, or pressure can suddenly flip the switch. That’s why important tasks get done last minute while less important but interesting things get all your attention.
