For parents, how can you tell a lively child from true ADHD?
My 7-year-old is bright and constantly on the go, and teachers are starting to hint about attention issues. As a paediatric clinician, what do you look for to distinguish between a naturally energetic child and ADHD that genuinely needs assessment and support?

Energy alone is not ADHD. The key is impairment and consistency. ADHD symptoms are persistent across settings and interfere with learning, relationships, or daily functioning. A lively child can focus when needed and adjust behavior with structure. A child with ADHD struggles even when motivated and supported. Developmental context matters. Assessment looks at patterns over time, not isolated behaviors.
