I can maintain routines briefly, but one disruption causes everything to unravel. Why are routines so fragile in ADHD?

Routines tend to collapse easily in ADHD because they never become true habits; they remain effortful, manually managed sequences that rely on working memory, momentum, and context cues. Instead of running on autopilot, each step of a routine requires conscious initiation and mental energy, so even a small disruption such as a schedule change, poor sleep, an unexpected demand causes a break the chain and forces the brain to rebuild the entire sequence from scratch. Since task initiation is already a major friction point, restarting after a disruption feels disproportionately hard. Emotional reactions like frustration or shame can add further resistance, and changes in environment or timing remove the cues the routine depended on. The result is a system that works only when conditions are stable, making routines feel fragile and easily derailed.
