In ADHD, attention is highly dependent on emotional state, which is why focus can drop sharply when someone feels anxious, bored, frustrated, overwhelmed, or under‑stimulated. Clinicians understand this as a neurobiological pattern rather than a personal failing: emotional regulation differences, dopamine‑based motivation pathways, and limited executive‑function bandwidth all make ADHD attention more sensitive to internal states. When emotions spike, cognitive resources are pulled away from tasks, disrupting initiation, persistence, and working memory. This creates the well‑known “inconsistency” people with ADHD describe, being able to focus intensely when emotionally engaged, yet struggling when emotions are flat or dysregulated. In short, attention in ADHD is deeply state‑based, and emotional shifts have a much stronger impact on focus than they do in neurotypical brains.
