Getting diagnosed in BC as an adult: MSP, private clinics, and what I actually paid
Vancouver, 29F, four months start to finish — here's the hybrid route since "just go private" and "just wait" both felt wrong.
GP was willing to refer but straight-up warned me: public psychiatry wait is long and adult ADHD gets deprioritized. So: stayed IN the public queue (free to wait), meanwhile booked a private psychiatrist consult — $450 for an assessment appointment, note this is NOT the $3k psychoeducational thing, different products — who could diagnose and initiate treatment, then transferred ongoing care back to my GP for refills.
MSP covered: GP visits, would've covered public psychiatry eventually. Out of pocket: the $450, plus meds (no extended benefits).
The lesson I paid to learn: if you have ANY employer extended health, check psychology/psychiatry reimbursement BEFORE paying. Mine covered part of it — found out after. Ask me anything.

OP's $450 wouldn't have been claimable on mine while a $1,900 psychoed would have — the reimbursement logic is category-based, not sanity-based. Total wait beat my friend who went pure-public by about 8 months. The queue-plus-shortcut pattern works because staying IN the public queue costs nothing.
