Why do I seem ‘fine’ to others but feel completely burnt out inside?
People tell me I’m doing well, but internally I feel overwhelmed and depleted. How does masking contribute to burnout in adults with ADHD?

This disconnect is very common in adults with ADHD, especially those who have learned to mask well.
Masking means using constant effort to appear organized, calm, productive, and emotionally steady, even when that does not match your internal state. From the outside, things look fine because the performance is working. Internally, that performance is expensive. It requires continuous self monitoring, suppression of impulses, emotional regulation, and pushing past fatigue.
Over time, that effort drains cognitive and emotional reserves. You may be meeting expectations, but you are doing it without support and often at the cost of rest, joy, and self connection. Because others only see the output, the depletion stays invisible. That invisibility can make burnout feel lonely and confusing.
Clinically, burnout here is not caused by doing too much, but by doing everything through compensation. Anxiety, perfectionism, or people pleasing often hold things together until they no longer can. When capacity drops, it can feel sudden, even though the strain has been building for years.
Feeling burnt out while appearing fine does not mean you are ungrateful or dramatic. It means your nervous system has been carrying more than it shows. Reducing masking, even in small safe ways, often restores energy and makes burnout more preventable.
