My family thinks ADHD is a ‘modern trend’ — how do I respond?
My parents and relatives dismiss ADHD as social media hype. I’m tired of defending myself but also want them to understand. What’s an effective way to explain ADHD in plain language without getting pulled into a debate?

This belief usually comes from outdated information rather than bad intent. ADHD has been recognized for decades, but awareness of adult and inattentive presentations is newer. Increased diagnosis reflects better recognition, not a sudden surge in cases.
Clinicians often encourage setting boundaries around how much you engage in these debates. You don’t owe anyone proof. Sharing that ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition with strong research backing can be enough. If conversations consistently feel invalidating, protecting your own mental health matters more than convincing others.
