As responsibilities increase, the amount of planning, prioritizing, and self monitoring required also increases. These are all executive functions, which are already more effortful in ADHD. What looks like symptoms getting worse is often a system reaching its limit. When demands exceed capacity, the brain shifts into survival mode. Tasks feel heavier, mistakes increase, and emotional regulation becomes harder. This is not regression. It is a signal that supports have not scaled with responsibility. Clinicians often think in terms of fit between demands and supports. Increasing responsibility usually requires increasing structure, delegation, or accommodations to prevent overload and burnout.
