Role transitions require rapid shifts in attention, expectations, identity, and priorities. All of this relies heavily on executive function. ADHD brains struggle most with transitions, especially when there is little time to reset or prepare.
Switching roles can also remove familiar cues and routines that were quietly supporting you. Even positive changes can feel destabilizing because they increase cognitive load. What feels like worsening ADHD is often just the cost of constant reorientation.
Clinicians often recommend buffering transitions with clear boundaries, rituals, or decompression time. Reducing the number of role switches or adding predictable anchors can significantly improve functioning.
