Even low-key social events leave me wiped out. How much of that exhaustion is due to masking rather than introversion?

Even low key social events can be tiring for people with ADHD because they still require sustained attention, emotional regulation, and self monitoring. You may be tracking conversations, managing impulses, reading cues, and staying engaged, even if it looks effortless from the outside. That internal effort adds up. Many people with ADHD also mask during social interactions, adjusting how they speak, react, or present themselves. Masking is cognitively expensive, regardless of how relaxed the setting is. The exhaustion is not about the event itself, but about how much regulation your brain was doing the entire time. Feeling wiped afterward is a sign of effort, not weakness or antisocial tendencies.
